Baseball Falls 14-3 At USF

San Francisco, Calif. - San Jose State was defeated 14-3 by USF in nonconference action at Benedetti Diamond on Tuesday afternoon.

The Dons (32-21) got out to a 4-0 lead after three innings, with Derek Atkinson jump-starting the offense with his first home run of the season in the second.

A six-run USF fourth inning grew the lead to 10-2. Zachary Turner collected two of his four RBI in the sixth with a single up the middle.

Five Spartan pitchers combined to give up 13 earned runs on 18 hits.

"We just didn't play well today," said San Jose State head coach Dave Nakama. "They were just better than us."

Andrew Pulido (1-0) entered the game in the third for USF and earned the win despite giving up two runs on five hits in 2.2 innings. The victory for the Dons completes a three-game season sweep of the Spartans.

Ross Slaney (0-1) started for SJSU (15-37) and took the loss after giving up two runs on four hits in 2.1 innings.

The Spartans got three consecutive hits to start the fourth inning. Matt Carroll singled and Jacob Valdez doubled. Then Nick Schulz knocked them both in with a single up the middle cutting the Dons' lead to 4-2.

However, 10 unanswered runs by USF put the game away.

The RBIs for Schulz were number 30 and 31 for the year and he has tallied six in the last three games.

San Jose State wraps up the season this weekend with the final Western Athletic Conference series against CSU Bakersfield. The Spartans are inside the postseason bubble by half a game over Seattle U. While SJSU hosts the Runners, the number-one team in the WAC, Seattle U will host sixth-place New Mexico State.

First pitch between the Spartans and Runners is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Friday night at Municipal Stadium.
