Left-handed pitcher Jonathan Hernandez of Wilmington, Calif., has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to compete for the San Jose State University baseball team beginning the 2014 season. Head coach Dave Nakama made the announcement.
"Jonathan is going to help give us the depth we need in the bullpen," Nakama said. "He'll be a left-handed option for us with good experience."
In 2013 Hernandez was 3-2 with a 3.21 ERA in 33.2 innings as a freshman reliever at LA Harbor College. He struck out 22 batters and walked only six.
A graduate of Banning High School in Wilmington, Calif., Hernandez was a starting pitcher, outfielder and designated hitter. He finished his junior campaign 8-4 with a 1.81 ERA in 69.2 innings while hitting .459 with 24 RBI. He was a 2010 First-Team All-Los Angeles City Section choice.
As a senior, Hernandez hit .351 with 23 RBI and scored 24 runs as Banning's designated hitter.
