Women's Soccer Loses Tightly-Contested Exhibition Match

Aug 16, 2013

The San Jose State University women's soccer team out-shot the Women's Professional Soccer League's West Coast Wildkatz but dropped the match, 2-1, in the Spartans' lone exhibition match of the season on Friday.

In the 20 minute, freshman Lupita Estrada put San Jose State on the board first off of an assist from classmate Carley McBeath. But former California standout Stephanie Wieger tied the game for the Wildkatz at one off of a corner kick.

The Wildkatz took the lead, 2-1, in the 54 minute on a goal by San Diego State graduate Michaela DeJesus, for the game's final score.

Estrada led the Spartans in shots with five of her team's 17 shots. The Wildkatz, who boasted four former San Jose State women's soccer players (Lauren Sanchez, Roxy Kamal, Vanessa Afonso Miskella and Amanda Martin) took 10 shots.

The Spartans open their regular season on the road at the University of San Diego Tournament. They face hosts San Diego on Aug. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
