Women's Gymnastics Earns 13th-Highest GPA In NCAA

Aug 27, 2013

San José , Calif. - The San José State University women's gymnastics team had the 13-highest grade point average (GPA) of all NCAA women's gymnastics programs and earned 14 individual academic awards, the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) announced on Friday, August 28.

Both the No. 13 ranking and 14 individual academic awards are program-bests. For a gymnast to earn an academic award, she must earn at least a 3.5 GPA.

"This award shows our team's commitment to academics," Head Coach Wayne Wright said. "It's not only about doing well in the gym, but also the classroom. In the end, a student-athlete's academic career will pay off just as equally as his or her athletic career."

The Spartans' 3.5146 GPA during the 2012-13 school year was the highest among all San José State athletic programs, and the highest in Wright's 13-year tenure. Said Wright, "We have an awesome academic advisor in Marwa Abbas who, along with me and my staff, constantly remind our student-athletes how important it is to stay on top of their academics."

The Spartans' No. 13 ranking is second among Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) programs. Alaska-Anchorage had the conference's highest GPA, with a team 3.5817 GPA.

Freshman Allison Bellingham earned a perfect 4.0 GPA as a kinesiology major. Four other Spartans earned a 3.9 grade point average or higher: Patricia Aubel (3.97, mathematics), Amy Bellingham (3.9, child and adolescent development), Cassandra Harrison (3.9, kinesiology) and Adrianne Manseau (3.96, communication studies).
