San Jose, Calif. - In a match that has annually brought out physical play, the San José State Spartans and Sacramento State Hornets combined for nine yellow cards, 26 fouls and a 1-0 decision for the Hornets.
The loss leaves the Spartans at 0-1-0 and Sacramento State starts its season 1-0-0.
The Hornets Chimdum Mez took a short lob pass on the far sideline and dribbled the ball to just outside the right side of the penalty box. From there he let go a shot, which found the net at the back of the far post. The goal came at the 102:30 mark and was assisted by Ivan Ramirez.
The physical play started early with the first yellow card coming less than five minutes into the match and a total of six being issued in the first 45 minutes.
The Spartans looked good in the first half. They had a 7-to-3 shot advantage and overall the more dangerous chances. Eric Mendez had two shots on goal in the first 15 minutes, but Kyler McLaughlin had perhaps the best chance of the half in the 20th minute.
With the play happening to the left of the Sacramento State keeper, McLaughlin snuck in behind the defense. When the ball came across the box, he took a shot, which slammed off the crossbar of the open goal. As the first 45 minutes expired the match was 0-0.
In the second half, Sacramento State began to push forward and take the play to the Spartans. They had an 8-2 advantage in shots and put four on frame, none particularly dangerous, while neither of the San José State attempts reached the goal.
Again, the Spartans had a chance to get on the board in regulation time. At the 71:09 mark, Frankie Beauchamp was on the ball from point-blank range, but his shot from in the box sailed over the net. As time expired the shots were equal 11-to-11 and the score was 0-0.
Each team had shot on goal in the first overtime. Sacramento State finally broke through in the second overtime on the Mez goal.
For the match the shots were even 13-to-13, but the Hornets held a 7-to-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Mendez led San José State with four attempts, two on frame. Enrique Montano and Beauchamp each got off two. Ben Reiter had the Spartans other shot on goal.
Felix Petermann made six saves for San José State in the loss. His record is 1-0-0. Cesar Castillo stopped all three shots, which reached him, in the win.
The Spartans next match is Sunday, September 1 against Southern Illinois -Edwardsville (1-0-0). Kickoff in Spartan Stadium is set for 11:30 a.m.
