The San José State men's cross country team finished in fourth place out of six teams at the Fresno State Invitational in Woodward Park on Saturday.
The Spartans scored 124 points as a team, coming in behind CSU Fullerton (63), Fresno State (61) and the winner Cal Poly (20).
Jannik Ernst led the way for San José State for the second consecutive race. He completed the four-mile run in 20:31.20, good for 14th out of 61 individuals.
The second Spartan to cross the finish line was Matthew Stephens in 36th place who clocked a 21:31.40.
Ben Branagh, in his first action of the season, finished 42nd with a time of 22:08.60. Nicholas Sherrell (22:11.60, 43rd) and Garrick Chan (22:38.30, 46th) rounded out the scorers for San José State.
Alexander Selevos and Samuel Ryan also competed and finished 48th and 53rd respectively.
The Cal Poly Mustangs had three runners occupy the top spots individually with Chris Frias taking first-place honors with a time of 19:15.40.
The Spartans have two weeks to prepare for the Stanford Invitational coming up on September 28. The race in Palo Alto, Calif., will be the midway point of the regular season.
