Corvallis, Ore. - The San José State men's soccer team conceded the only goal of the match in the 42nd minute and fell to the Oregon State Beavers 0-1 in a rain and wind storm on Sunday afternoon. on Oregon State's Lorenz Field.

"This was a game of halves," said head coach Gary St. Clair, "In the first, they had a 25 mile per hour wind at their back and they pounded shots at us."

Oregon State (6-2-0) led the Spartans 9-to-2 in shots and 2-to-1 in shots on goal in the first 45 minutes and got their goal at the 41:15 mark. It came off a corner kick into the box by Mikhail Doholis. Daniel Van Vleet was credited with the goal and the Beavers took a 1-0 lead at the intermission.

"In the second half, we had the wind in our favor and had the better of the play.," said St. Clair. "We had several very good scoring opportunities, but just couldn't finish in the final third of the field."

Frankie Beauchamp who took a game-high six shots, five in the second half, and put one on frame, led the Spartans (0-6-1) offensively. Brian Ruiz-Unger had two shots, one on goal, and Ben Reiter attempted one shot. Keeper Felix Petermann stopped three of the four Beavers' shots that were on frame.

Oregon State took 16 shots. Borce Atanasov took a team-high four, but both Van Vleet's attempts were on goal, including the game winner. In goal, Matt Bersano earned a clean sheet with two saves.

"With the conditions being what they were, we had a good performance against a very experienced team. I was particularly pleased with the way Frankie, Enrique (Montano), Kyle (O'Mahoney) and Andy (Kelly) played. We're a young team that's getting scoring opportunities, which is good. The goals will come."

San José State wraps up non-conference play next Sunday, September 29, against Saint Mary's. Kickoff in Spartan Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
