Stanford, Calif. --- The San José State University women's swimming team had a close showing in the 2013-14 season opener against Stanford, winning three and falling only by 38 points to the Cardinals.
"I am very pleased with our progress thus far this season," said head coach Sage Hopkins about the season opener. "The team has been training very hard and are very focused in both the pool and weight room. It was a great way to start competing. Our conditioning is far ahead of any previous year at this point in the season."
Alysha Bush, a freshman from Newberg, Ore., and senior Darcie Anderson, from Willows, Calif., were individual winners for the Spartans. In her first San José State meet, Bush won the 100 free in 52.24 and was second in the 50 free at 23.85.
"We are really happy about Alysha's progress this season as well as her coachability," says Hopkins. "We were able to make an adjustment after each of her first two races and she put together a great 100."
Anderson won the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.09.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Ashlyn Acosta, Christina Bruni, Michaela McLean, and Kaitlin Taylor finished first in 1:38.17 to end the meet.
The Spartans are back in the pool on September 28, 2013, for their Blue and Gold Meet held at The Aquatic Center. The next competition is the two-day Bulldog Invitational, October 11 & 12, in Fresno.
