Berkeley, Calif. --- The San José State University women's tennis team kicks off its 2013-14 season as one of 16 teams competing in the Cal NIKE Invitational.
The three-day tournament, hosted by the University of California, begins Friday, September 27 and runs through Sunday, September 29. Play begins at 8:00 on Friday morning at the Hellman Tennis Complex on the Cal campus.
San Jose State is coming off of a strong 2012-13 season. Third-year head coach Sylvain Malroux led the Spartans to a 19-6 record and their first and only Western Athletic Conference Championship.
Returners for the Spartans include senior Sabastiani Leon Chao, who returns after a 16-16 overall singles record for last season and junior Julianna Bacelar, who led San Jose State with a 28-8 singles and 26-7 doubles records in 2012-13.
The Spartans have seven singles entries and three doubles pairs competing in the tournament. Newcomer Gaélle Rey leads the Spartans at the #1 position with Leon Chao at #3.
