SAN JOSÉ STATE TRAVELS TO CAL POLY, SACRAMENTO STATE: This weekend, the San José State University women's soccer team (0-4) heads to the Central Coast to visit the Cal Poly Mustangs (3-0), then heads to the state capital to face Sacramento State. The Spartans play the Mustangs on Friday, September 6, at 7:00 p.m. and the Hornets on Sunday, September 8, at 3:30 p.m.
The Spartans faced Bay Area rivals the University of San Francisco and No. 18 California on Friday, August 30 and Sunday, September 1, and left both Negoesco and Edwards Stadiums with losses. Alexis Venegas scored her first collegiate goal to tie the match, 1-1, but a last-minute goal by the Dons handed them the 2-1 victory. Against the Golden Bears, the Spartans entered the scoreless second half with the 4-3 advantage in shots. A stellar five-point performance by reigning PAC-12 Freshman of the Year Ifeoma Onumonu doomed San José State, as they lost to California, 3-0.

CAL POLY: The Mustangs (3-0) have started the 2013 season with a three-match unbeaten streak, thanks to a stellar showing by sophomore forward Elise Krieghoff. A two-time 2013 Big West Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, Krieghoff leads the nation in goals scored with seven. A four-goal performance in Cal Poly's second game of the season, against CSU Bakersfield, sparked her offensive output. Starting goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti has one solo and one combined shutout, with a 0.75 goals against average and .875 winning percentage. In his 22nd season as head coach is Alex Crozier.
SACRAMENTO STATE: After being shut out by UC Davis and Cal Poly to open the 2013 season, the Hornets (1-2) earned their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Sept. 1. Sophomore forward Alyssa Anderson scored two goals and Gabriella Trenton had two assists in the win. Starting goalkeeper Kimberly Mata has a 2.00 goals against average and a .778 save percentage in 270 minutes in net. Head Coach Randy Dedini is in his seventh season.
SAN JOSÉ STATE HEAD COACH: Head Coach Jeff Leightman is at the Spartans' helm for his sixth season, entering 2013 with a 40-47-11 record. The 2009 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Coach of the Year, he is the only coach to lead his team to back-to-back regular season conference titles. In each of his first four years, he led the Spartans to a WAC Tournament bid.
SPARTANS PICKED TO FINISH NINTH: The 2013 San José State University women's soccer team was picked to finish ninth in the Mountain West by a panel of the conference's 11 head coaches.
The Spartans return seven starters and 13 letterwinners to its 2012 squad that finished 6-11-1. In its inaugural Mountain West season, San José State plays a program-high 10 conference matches and faces two teams ranked in the NSCAA/Continental Tire preseason list (San Diego State, No. 11; California, No. 20).
2013 SQUAD FEATURES QUALITY RETURNERS AND EXCITING NEWCOMERS: The 2012 team-leading scorer and second team All-WAC and Preseason CollegeSportsMadness.com honoree Megan Molina joins the team for her senior season, while centerback Rachel Docherty, who played the second-most minutes of all returners, anchors the backline. Seven newcomers join the squad, including 2012 Big 8 Conference Player of the Year Kareli Rodriguez and goalkeeper Sarah Peplinski, the 2013 Wisconsin Valley Conference Player of the Year. In addition, Niki Brooks, who has six years of coaching at the collegiate level, joins the team as an assistant coach.
