San Jose, Calif. - The San José State Spartans men's soccer team tallied three goals, equaling their total for the entire season, but lost in a scoring-fest, 4-3, to the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners in Western Athletic Conference action on Friday night.
The Spartans (0-8-2, 0-2-0 WAC) got goals from Frankie Beauchamp, Colton Portela and Rory Knibbs, all in the second half, but allowed an equal number to CSUB in the period.
"We played well enough to win," said Knibbs. "I had a really good chance in the first half, which I should have scored on. We have been working hard in training and its nice to see the goals, but we should have won this one."
The difference turned out to be a goal in the 28th minute. The Roadrunners' Joe Masumiya scored off a free kick from just outside the 18. His shot went over the San José State wall and found the back of the net, past a diving Felix Petermann. It was the first of two goals for Masumiya on the night.
Down 0-1 to start the second half, the Spartans were fouled in the box, which gave Beauchamp a penalty kick. He scored low the keeper's left at the 47:16 mark to tie it at 1-1.
The Spartans enjoyed the tie for barely more than 90 seconds. Masumiya had another free kick, at a sharp angle, which he scored high to the far post, putting CSU Bakersfield (3-6-1, 1-1-0) back ahead 2-1.
Just over two minutes later, at the 50:56 mark, Portela got the equalizer, his first collegiate goal. Israel Ayala took a shot from just outside the six, which Roadrunners keeper Nicolas Clever stopped, but didn't control. The rebound came right to Portela who tucked it inside the post for a 2-2 score.
CSUB then got goals in the 57th and 64th minute to go up 4-2.
The Spartans kept battling and at the 78:53 mark made it a one-goal game on Knibbs' second goal of the season. Beauchamp had the ball at the top of the 18 and passed it to Kinbbs just outside the six. He turned and struck a shot high to the right corner. The strike made the score 4-3, but the Spartans couldn't find another goal and fell by that score.
San José State took 12 shots on the night, led by Knibbs with four. Beauchamp attempted three. Sam Croucher, Isreal Ayala, Enrique Montano, Portela and Uriel Ayala had a shot apiece.
The Roadrunners' Masumiya had eight of his sides 28 shots, 10 of which were on frame.
Clever made two save in the win. Petermann had six in the loss.
The Spartans wrap up their four-game home stand on Sunday, October 13, against UNLV. The match is the second game of a doubleheader and is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. in Spartan Stadium.
