Honolulu, Hawaii-----Straight-set singles wins by Sabastiani Leon Chao, Gaelle Rey and Julianna Bacelarpowered San Jose State University to a 5-2 victory over the University of Hawaii in a non-conference women's tennis match.
Rey had the most dominating performance in singles. Playing number-three, the freshman from Geneva, Switzerland blanked Hawaii's Sarah Gealer, 6-0, 6-0.
The #65-ranked Spartans (1-1) picked up a fourth singles victory when Jessica Willettovercame losing her opening set and a 5-1 deficit in a match tiebreaker for a 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-5 victory over Kelsey Daguio of Hawaii (1-2) at number-five singles.
Like the season-opener against Nevada the day before, San Jose State started strong with a pair of victories in doubles action for the first point in the seven-point contest. The teams of Rey and Willett and Bacelar and Justine Delevalwon their matches at number-two and number-three doubles, respectively.
"We were frustrated with yesterday's loss (to Nevada) and we did not want to do the same today. We were ready to play today. Everyone wanted to play and we won," said Bacelar who finished the two-match swing in Hawaii undefeated in four combined singles and doubles matches.
"It's nice to get the first win of the season. Playing the first match of the season is not easy. When you haven't competed for a few months, it's always challenging to find your mark and feel competitive right away. I thought we did a real good job yesterday (against Nevada) in the doubles. We did a great job today," said San Jose State head coach Sylvain Malroux, who also believed the Spartans competed better in singles play against Hawaii than it did against Nevada.
"Yesterday's match really helped us get back in the competition mode and be very competitive."
For the second match in a row, San Jose State broke up its nationally-ranked doubles pair of Rey and Marie Klockerwith positive results.
"We knew that Gaelle and Marie being a nationally-ranked and already proven to be very competitive was a good thing and we could have a solid number-one (doubles team). We told them it's wonderful to be nationally-ranked (#47), but all of our players understood that it was in our best interest to have three competitive doubles teams," Malroux stated. "We felt it was best for us to break up Gaelle and Marie for now. A great doubles team is one thing, but we want to have three great doubles teams because we want to win as a team. It proved to be very successful this week."
San Jose State returns to action, Tuesday, January 21, for its home opener with Sacramento State. First serve at the Spartan Tennis Complex at 12th & Humboldt Streets, is at 1:00 p.m.
