Women's Water Polo 14th In National Poll; Heads To Stanford Invitational

In its sternest test of the season, the San Jose State University women's water polo team will face four top-20 nationally-ranked teams at the Stanford Invitational, Saturday, February 1, and Sunday, February 2, at the Belardi Pool on the Stanford University campus.

The Spartans (7-2) and ranked 14th nationally in the January 29 Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Association weekly poll take on #4-California (6-0) and #16-Michigan (1-1) on February 1 at 10:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.

San Jose State then faces #3-UCLA (8-0) and either #2-Stanford, #6-Hawaii, #5-UC Irvine or #17-UC Davis on February 2. The UCLA match is at 9:10 a.m. and the Spartans' final contest takes place either at 1:00, 2:15 or 3:30 p.m.

The Spartans are coming off a 3-1 record at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invite on January 24 & 25. San Jose State topped #18-UC Santa Barbara and unranked Azusa Pacific and Fresno Pacific before losing an 11-6 decision to #5-UC Irvine.

Interim head coach Johnny Bega is taking one of the higher scoring teams to the eight-team Stanford Invitational. The Spartans are averaging 14.33 goals per match. Freshman Clara Espar Llaquet has 32 goals in the first nine matches to lead San Jose State. Sophomore Rae Lekness is next with 25.
