Jan. 8, 2014

Final Stats

Fort Collins, Colo. - With eight points for the game, junior guard Ta'Rea Cunnigan moved into ninth place on the San Jose State women's basketball career scoring list, but the Spartans had no answer for the Colorado State Rams offense and lost 101-60 on Wednesday night in Moby Arena.

Cunnigan hit a 3-pointer with 39 seconds to go in the first half to tie Rhoda Chew (1982-85, 1,188 points) for ninth place on the program's all-time scoring list. She added another four points in the second half, and with 1,192 now trails Lamisha Augustine (2002-06) by 34 points for eighth place on the program's all-time scoring list.

Jasmine Smith led San José State (6-8, 0-3 MW) with 22 points and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds. Rebecca Woodberry was the other Spartan in double figures with 11 points. Jayzyl Tauala, who returned to the lineup after missing nine games, scored a career-high eight points.

Colorado State jumped out to a 8-0 lead and was up 17-9 by the first media timeout. They built a 24-point advantage, their largest of the half, at 53-29 with 2:14 to play and took a 55-35 advantage into the locker room.

San José State was only able to get a defensive stop and score back-to-back buckets three times in the first 20 minutes, as the Rams shots 53 percent (21-for-40) from the field including 47 percent (8-for-17) from long range.

Colorado State opened the second half with a 14-2 run and never looked back. They had their largest lead of the game, 44 points, with 1:38 to play.

San José State struggled from the floor for the third game in a row hitting 35 percent (13-for-37) in the first half and 30 percent (23-for-77) for the game.

The Spartans turned the ball over just 14 times, but Colorado State scored 23 points off those mistakes. In addition, the Rams dominated on the boards 60-to-39, the second time in three outing the Spartans surrendered at least 60 rebounds.

Colorado State (11-3, 3-0 MW) had four players in double figures paced by former Spartan A.J. Newton who hit six-of-seven from 3-point range on her way to a game-high 22 points. Ellen Nystrom recorded the first triple double in Colorado State history with 11 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists.

The 41-point loss is the worst the year and the largest margin of defeat since at 92-48 loss to Louisiana Tech in the 2009-10 season. Six of the team's eight losses this year have been by more than 25 points and in four of those games the opponent has scored more than 100 points.

San José State wraps up its road trip with a game at New Mexico on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans and Lobos tip off at 2:00 p.m. (MT) in The Pit.
