Spartans Head To Run For The Dream Indoor Meet

Feb. 16, 2014

Meet Schedule

San Jose State University's second women's track and field meet in school history is Monday, February 17, when the Spartans compete in the 2014 Run For The Dream Indoor Meet at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif.

The Spartans will have their final time on an indoor track prior to the 2014 Mountain West Championships, February 27 though March 1 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Head coach Jeff Petersmeyer continues building the University's newest intercollegiate sports offering. At the UW Invitational in Seattle, the team's first meet, San Jose State athletes ran the 60-meter dash and the mile run. The first-year coach expects to double the number of events entered.

"We're excited to go to Fresno. We have some new people on this trip - a few new sprinters and (distance runner) Aylin Mejia will be opening up for the first time in the indoor season," says Petersmeyer who plans to have Spartans race individually in the 55-meter dash, the 800 and the mile. The San Jose State women also will field its first mile relay team.

Mejia, a senior from San Diego and a three-time letterwinner for the San Jose State cross country team, was the Spartans' most consistent runner during the 2013 cross country season.

"We had three (sprinters at the UW Invitational). Now, we'll have five for Fresno. That will be a growing part of our program going forward," adds the Spartans head coach.

"We want to see improvements in our times. It's exciting we'll be down there with a lot of California schools. (Meet director) Bob Fraley did a real good job putting this meet together. It (the meet) will give us a good idea where to put people for the conference meet."

Rebecca Garcia was San Jose State's best finisher in the mile run at the UW Invitational with a 5:15.11 time. Taylor Grffin's 8.29 was the team's best time in the 60 meter dash.
