San José, Calif. --- The San José State University women's tennis team made it two wins in a row after defeating the University of the Pacific, 5-2, in a non-conference dual match.
The Spartans (4-8) started the day with a 1-0 lead in doubles after the teams of Gaelle Rey and Sabastiani Leon Chao and Marie Klocker and Justine Deleval won in their respective matches.
Rey and Leon Chao won the first doubles set after defeating the University of the Pacific's (4-3) Hana Ritterova and Regina Suarez, 8-6. Klocker and Deleval later secured the doubles point for San José State, topping the duo of Christina Ferrari and Gergana Bonocheva, 8-3.
"I think the team did really well and I think they did a really good job in the doubles by coming out strong and carrying it over into the singles." said head coach Sylvain Malroux. "I loved the beginning of the singles. They were both really into it and focused. I thought one through six played well. The outcome was different on all the courts but they did really well coming into the singles and being aggressive. I think it was a really great win for us today."
In singles play, four Spartans won in straight sets against the Tigers.
Leon Chao won the second point for the Spartans, topping Ferrari in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Julianna Bacelar also won in straight sets, defeating Christina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz 6-0, 6-1 and Klocker won her singles match 6-4, 6-4 against Ritterova.
Playing at the #6 position, freshman Tipper Truong secured the win for San José State after she defeated Bonocheva, 6-3, 6-1.
"I was really excited for clinching the game especially with a home court advantage," said Truong on her game-clinching performance. "I think my performance was good. My serving was on point today and I was able to be aggressive. My teammates did a wonderful jobs and put their heart out there and it was a great win for the Spartans."
San José State returns to the Spartan Tennis Complex on Saturday, March 1 as it takes on UC Santa Barbara. Match play begins at 12:00 p.m. (PT).
