Katelynn Thompson MPSF Newcomer Of The Week

Woodland, Calif.----- San José State University goalkeeper Katelynn Thompson, who played a key role in the Spartans' 11-9 come-from-behind victory over #14-Indiana University, is the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Women's Water Polo Newcomer of the Week.

Thompson entered the March 18 match at the start of the second quarter with #10-San José State trailing 4-2. In the final three quarters, the Del Oro High School graduate was credited with her season-high of 11 saves. She did not allow a goal for an 8:45 span of the second half as the Spartans wiped out an 8-4 third-quarter deficit to take a 10-8 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

The San José State freshman was stellar in the fourth quarter with six saves in the period and allowed one late goal. The Spartans completed their biggest comeback of the season and lengthened their current win streak to five.

Thompson's honor marks the second week in a row a San José State player was named the MPSF Newcomer of the Week. Following the Aztec Invitational the week ending March 16, Clara Espar Llaquet was the conference honoree for the second time this season.

Thompson and Espar Llaquet will be two of the Spartans (18-9, 0-2 MPSF) getting ready for the March 29 home match versus MPSF conference leader University of Southern California (18-0, 3-0 MPSF). The match begins at 12:00 p.m. at The Aquatic Center. There is no admission charge and parking is available one block away in the 7th Street garage.
