For the second time in three weeks and third time this season, San Jose State University's Clara Espar Llaquetis the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Women's Water Polo Newcomer of the Week.
Espar Llaquet established a new school single-season scoring record in the Spartans' 10-9 conference loss to previously unbeaten and #1-ranked University of Southern California on March 30 at The Aquatics Center. The freshman from Barcelona, Spain scored three goals giving her 88 for the season, two more than the previous record of 86 set by Adriana Vogt in 2011.
With three regular-season and three MPSF Tournament games, Espar Llaquet is 12 goals shy of becoming the fifth player in conference history to record 100 goals in a season. Presently, her 88 goals are the ninth best total in MPSF history.
#8-San Jose State (18-10, 0-3 MPSF) is next in action, Sunday, April 6, hosting #5-Arizona State in a 12:00 p.m. match at the Aquatics Center. It will be Senior Day for six Spartans - goalkeepers Maddie Reardon and Katie Lind and field players Rachel Henry, Alisa Argend, Ashlea Coski and Najelah Najdawi.
