Spartans Comeback To Top Nevada, 4-3, On Senior Day

April 18, 2014

San José, Calif.--- After losing all three doubles matches to the University of Nevada, the San José State University women's tennis team had a great team comeback in singles, winning four straight matches in the 4-3 win over the Wolf Pack.

Playing at the #1 and #2 positions, freshmen Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey each saw their singles matches go into three sets.

Klocker won the first set against Nevada's (11-9) Michelle Okhremchuk, 6-4. After losing the second set 4-6, Klocker topped Okhremchuk in the third set, 6-4, to clinch the match for the Spartans.

After dropping the first set, Rey was able to fight back from the deficit, defeating Sheila Morales Hildago 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.

Junior Julianna Bacelar won the first singles point for the Spartans (10-13) after she defeated Caroline Koenigsfeldt in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

At the #3 position, senior Sabastiani Leon Chao topped Sheila Smiley, 6-4, 6-3, for her 129th career win. Leon Chao now is tied for first with Chau Truong on the Spartans Career Win List.

"After doubles we were able to pull ourselves together and we united and decided that we needed to clinch this. It was more memorable to me because it was Senior Day and it was my last match. It is indredible what these girls can do." said Leon Chao about her overall team's performance.

San José State travels to UC Davis Saturday, April 19, for their last dual match of the season. Match play begins at 12:00 p.m. (PT) at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
