Fresno, Calif. --- The San José State University women's tennis advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 2014 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championships by sweeping Colorado State University, 4-0.
"Today, from singles to doubles, the team played really well," said head coach Sylvain Malroux about the team's win over Colorado State. "They had a great performance and they are ready to play San Diego State. We know they are a really good team and we are prepared to face them on Friday."
The Spartans started out the day with a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Playing at the #1 spot, the doubles team of Gaelle Rey and Marie Klocker won the first doubles match over Colorado State's Adriana Wojakowska and Natalie Heffron, 8-2.
At the #2 spot, the duo of Jessica Willett and Julianna Bacelar defeated Lauren Pick and Kaley Schultz, 8-4, securing the doubles point for the Spartans.
Going into singles, San José State only needed to win three matches to move onto the quarterfinal round. And, they got them, all in straight sets.
Senior Sabastiani Leon Chao gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead after defeating Lauren Pick, 6-0, 6-0, at the #3 position. With this win, Leon Chao improved her overall singles record to 21-11 and her school-record career win count to 132.
Klocker, at the #1 spot, finished next topping Heffron, 6-2, 6-1.
Rey secured the team victory over the Rams, defeating Wojakowska, 6-1, 6-0.
"We are really excited to have the chance to play against San Diego State again. I think that we can have an overall great performance." concluded Malroux.
The Spartans continue play on Friday, April 25, as they take on #3-seeded San Diego State University in the quarterfinal match. San Jose State will seek to avenge a 5-2 regular-season loss to the Aztecs. First serve in doubles is at 2:00 p.m. (PT).
