San Jose State University Water Polo 7th In Final National Poll

Bridgeport, Pa.----- After completing one of its most accomplished seasons in school history, the San Jose State University women's water polo team finished seventh in the final national weekly coaches' poll.

The Spartans completed the 2014 season with a 20-13 win-loss record and tied for fourth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) regular-season standings with a 2-4 mark. During the season, San Jose State defeated three teams ranked in the top-10 at the time of the match - #5-Arizona State, #6-Hawaii and #8-Princeton. San José State was sixth in the MPSF Tournament.

The #7-ranking is the eighth time since 2001 San Jose State finished seventh or higher in the final national weekly coaches' poll. The last time was 2011 when the Spartans ranked fifth at the end of the season.

Five of the six teams ahead of San Jose State are MPSF members starting with 2014 NCAA Champion Stanford. Besides the wins over Arizona State, Hawaii and Princeton, both of which finished 10th in the final poll, the Spartans topped Indiana, eighth in the final poll.

The 2014 Spartans also set single-season team records for goals scored with 393 and goals scored per match at 11.91. San Jose State's 8.61 goals allowed per match is the lowest since 2006.

Freshman Clara Espar Llaquet finished as the MPSF scoring leader with 96 goals and 2.91 goals scored per match. Rae Lekness was fourth with 76 goals; Timi Molnar, 18th, with 50; and Victoria Smith, tied for 23rd with 45. Freshman goalkeeper Katelynn Thompsonwas fourth in the MPSF in goals allowed average at 7.02.
