Spartans All Over The Map For Summer Baseball

June 13, 2014

San José State baseball has nine student-athletes currently playing in collegiate summer baseball leagues across the country. Clubs ranging from the west end of Canada to Massachusetts' Cape Cod have begun the summer season with at least one Spartan on their roster.

Center fielder Andre Mercurio is fine-tuning with the Yarmouth Dennis Red Sox of the prestigious Cape Cod League. In 2013, a record total 257 former Cape Cod leaguers populated Major League Baseball rosters. Summer 2014 marks the league's 130th year of existence. Mercurio will return to SJSU in August as a fourth-year senior.

After starting 53 games at shortstop during his freshman campaign, Alec de Watteville carries on with the Winchester Royals of the Valley League. He is joined in Winchester, Va., by Spartans righty reliever Jackson Berumen, who also completed his freshman year with SJSU in 2014.

Infielders Michael Breen and Tyler Olivet are also in action on the east coast. Breen is in Washington D.C. with the DC Grays of the Cal Ripkin League, while Olivet plays for the Petersburg Generals in the Coastal Plains League in Petersburg, Va.

Catcher Jack Veasey will be putting down the signs in the Great Lakes League with the Lake Erie Monarchs in Flat Rock, Michigan. Veasey was the only other player beside Kyle Gallegos to record innings behind the plate for SJSU in 2014. He will return to the Spartans as a sophomore in 2015.

Two right-handed relievers, Michael Wright and Matt Smith will face each other on international ground in Canada's Western Baseball League. Wright is with the Victoria HarbourCats in Victoria, B.C., while Smith dons a Medicine Hat Mavericks uniform in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Finally, left-handed pitcher John Oberholtzer will spend the summer in the Pacific Northwest as a member of the Medford Rogues of the West Coast Collegiate League.
