SAN JOSE - The San José State University women's swimming and diving team will open its 2014-15 campaign on Friday, October 10 at the two-day Bulldog Invitational in Fresno, Calif.
In his 10th season at the helm for the Spartans, head coach Sage Hopkins guided his team to an eighth place finish in the programs first season as a member of the Mountain West conference.
"I can honestly say I am more excited for this season than any other season in recent memory," said Hopkins. "We have a tremendous group of incoming freshman and transfers. Combine that with a group that has gelled in a very impressive way in terms of performance and leadership in and out of the water, and I'm excited to see the things we will be able to accomplish."
Senior captains Christina Bruni, Michaela McLean and Haley Smith will lead the gold, blue and white this season. McLean led off for the Spartans 400 medley relay team that broke the previous school record of 3:39.45 placing fourth with a time of 3:38.98 at last seasons Mountain West Championships in San Antonio, Texas. Her split of 54.91 is the second fastest time in school history.
Freestyler Riley Spitser to the pool for the Spartans. Following her record-setting performances at the Mountain West Conference Championships, the San Diego, Calif. native earned All-Mountain West honors in the 200 free. Spitser set school records in the 200 (1:48.07), 500 (4:47.58), 1,000 (10:09.96) and 1,650 (16:48.87) while earning a seventh-place finish in the 200 free for her first all-conference honor swimming for the Spartans.
Hopkins will welcome 10 newcomers to this year's squad hailing from California, Washington, Arizona, Washington, Colorado, and Massachusetts.
Air Force will join San José State in the Bulldog Invitational. Opening race for the Bulldog Invitational is set for 4:00 p.m. PT. Coverage of the meet will be provided on the Mountain West Digital Network.
"We're very excited to get the season started this Friday at Fresno State," said Hopkins on the upcoming season opener. "We have some big goals this season and we're ready to get after it."
