Seattle, Wash. - The San José State men's soccer team had a 16-to-11 advantage in shots, but the UMKC Kangaroos made more of their opportunities and defeated the Spartans 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the Western Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship Tournament on Thursday night.
San Jose State, the fifth seed, had the first dangerous chance in the game. In the 24th minute, Rory Knibbs, a second-team All-WAC striker, hammered a shot off the crossbar. It was inches from giving the Spartans (6-11-2) an early lead and one of six shots by the team in the first 45 minutes.
The sides appeared headed to the half in a 0-0 tie, but at the 44:15 mark UMKC's Tato Chiaparro beat Spartans keeper Felix Petermann from outside the box. The goal, fired from the left side into the right corner, was the first of the year for the 'Roos midfielder and gave UMKC, the fourth seed, a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans chased the equalizer until the 73rd minute. Wes White made the score 2-0. After Petermann charged off his line, White converted on a shot from just inside the 18.
In the 77th minute Enrique Montano, one of four Spartans seniors whose collegiate careers came to an end after the game, hit the post on a free kick from 35 yards out.
The final nail came in the 83rd minute as White struck for his second goal of the game and a 3-0 lead for UMKC (8-9-2).
Greg Harte led San José State with four shots, two on frame. Montano took three, while Knibbs, Ruben Want and Frankie Beauchamp attempted two shots each. Jonathan Colunga, a second-team All-WAC performer, got one shot off.
Petermann made four saves in the loss. Chris McGaughey also had four saves, but earned the win and a clean sheet. Nick and Broc Cramer led UMKC with three shots each.
