San José State-Utah State series: The Spartans lead the series, 20-15-1. Utah State has wins in the last five meetings between these teams including a 40-12 victory last year in San Jose. The Spartans' last win in the series 30-7 victory in San Jose during the 2008 season. Utah State has wins in the last two games played in Logan. San José State's last victory in Logan was a 23-20 fourth-quarter comeback during the 2007 season. For a number of years during the 1980's, these teams held the NCAA Division I-A record for the highest scoring tie. On September 8, 1979, in Jack Elway's debut as San Jose State's head coach, the teams played to a 48-48 tie.

For the sixth week in a row, the Spartans are the national leader in fewest passing yards allowed.Five under 300:  For the fifth time this season, San Jose State limited an opponent to less than 300 yards of total offense when Hawaii gained a season-low 240 yards in the Spartans' 13-0 loss. Hawaii also became the fourth San Jose State opponent this season with its lowest yardage output of the season to date. The University of North Dakota (244) is the one San Jose State non-conference opponent that did not gain at least 300 yards against the Spartans.
An apparent San Jose State first: The November 15 Hawaii game marks the first known circumstance in which San Jose State did not attempt a punt in a game. The most recent occurrence the Spartans had punting just once in a game was the 2001 loss at Fresno State.
San José State heads into the Utah State game without attempting a punt in its last six quarters of action. The most recent Spartan punt was late in the second quarter of the November 8 Fresno State contest.
Gray ties Mountain West record: Quarterback Joe Gray became the third Mountain West player in history to throw for 300 or more yards in five consecutive games when he passed for 305 yards against Hawai'i (11/15). Former teammate David Fales and Fresno State's Derek Carr each passed for 300 or more yards in five consecutive games in 2013.
