MONTEREY PARK, Calif. - Senior Riley Spitser broke her own records in the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyles as the San José State women's swimming and diving team swam to a fifth place finish on the final day of the A3 Performance Invitational hosted by UC San Diego at East Los Angeles College.
Spitser touched the wall in the 1650 free in 16:34.72, breaking her previous school record of 16:48.87 set at the Mountain West Championships last season. Her 9:59.68 split for her first 1,000 yards marked the first time a Spartan swam the distance faster than 10:00.00.
"Today was definitely our best day of the weekend," said head coach Sage Hopkins following his teams fifth place finish. "We kind of had a little of a slow start, but really came to life yesterday morning and carried it over to today."
In the 200 back, the freshman duo of Morgan McCormick and Collen Humel, placed in the top-5. McCormick placed third with a time of 2:00.03, while Humel finished right behind her classmate touch the wall in 2:00.25.
SJSU also had an all-around showing in the 200 breaststroke as four Spartans placed. Leading the way was Michelle Berry. Berry finished 15th with a time of 2:20 while Amanda Buxbaum (22nd, 2:21.80), Dominique Yoder (31st, 2:23.60), and Shannon Slaught (32nd, 2:24.30) rounded out the field of swimmers for the Spartans.
In the final race of the meet, SJSU's "A" team of Spitser, Beneke, Solorio, and Nelson placed sixth in the 400 with a time of 3:25.54.
Fellow Mountain West Conference member, San Diego State, finished atop of the final standings with a total of 1,116 points, while UCLA (1,113), UCSB (875), and Hawaii (655) finished ahead of the Spartans.
San José State will take a break from the pool until Friday, January 2, when the Spartans will travel to Bakersfield for a head-to-head matchup with Cal State University Bakersfield.
