STILLWATER, Okla. - The San José State University women's tennis team fell in its season opener at Oklahoma State, 7-0, Saturday morning at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
The young San José State lineup featured three freshmen in Sybille Gauvain, Abbie Pahz and Malin Cubukcu, two sophomores in Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey, and a lone senior in Julianna Bacelar.
Making their dual match debuts at the No. 1 doubles position, Gauvain and Pahz dropped a 6-1 decision to the Cowgirls' fifth-ranked tandem of Viktoriya Lushkova and Kelsey Laurente.
In singles play, Bacelar took the first set, 6-4, before dropping the next two in a tightly contested match.
Gauvain also played at the top spot in the singles lineup, dropping a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Laurente.
"We fought hard today. It was a good leaning experience against a very good team," said head coach Sylvain Malroux. "Now we know as a team what we have to keep improving on and take this into future matches."
The Spartans will travel 60 miles east for a contest with No. 27 Tulsa on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. CT.
