SACRAMENTO - The San José State University women's tennis team cruised to its first victory of the season Saturday afternoon, rolling past Sacramento State, 7-0, at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.

The Spartans (1-2) took the doubles point from the Hornets (0-2) behind victories from the tandems of Sybille Gauvain and Gaelle Rey and Julianna Bacelar and Jessica Willett.

Freshman Abbie Pahz kicked off singles action by notching her first dual match win of her Spartans career, downing Tori Trylovich, 6-2, 6-3.

Malin Cubukcu also picked up her first victory, outdueling Ana Loaiza Esquivias in three sets.

Sybille Gauvain pulled off a three-set upset of the 51st-ranked singles player in the country, Alina Soltanici, to share the first victory milestone with Pahz and Cubukcu.

Marie Klocker, Rey and Bacelar all notched their first singles victories of the season to seal the Spartans' sweep of the Hornets.

"We are very happy to get our first win of the season against a good team," said head coach Sylvain Malroux. "We are proud of the way we played aggressively at the end and closed it out."

San José State will play the first of just six matches at Spartan Courts when it faces off with San Francisco on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 12 p.m.
