With its best start in program history, the San Jose State University women's water polo team takes its 8-0 record to the Stanford Invitational for four matches, Saturday, January 31, and Sunday, February 1, against top-20 ranked teams.
The #7-ranked Spartans (8-0) open the tournament with #6-UC Irvine (0-0) at 8:00 a.m. and #18-UC Davis (1-1) at 3:45 p.m. on January 31. San Jose State takes on host and #1-Stanford (2-0) Sunday at 8:00 a.m. and concludes the weekend against either #2-UCLA, #8-Hawaii or #13-Indiana in an afternoon contest.
Since 2010, San Jose State and UC Irvine split its last two matches. The Anteaters were an 11-6 winner at last year's UCSB Winter Invite in Santa Barbara while the Spartans posted a 7-6 triumph in 2010.
San José State left the UCSB Winter Invite last weekend with its first three wins of the season over top-20 ranked teams. Despite low-scoring triumphs in the 7-5 victory over #15-Michigan and the 8-6 decision over #11-Cal State Northridge, the Spartans still are averaging 13.1 goals a match. Rae Lekness (29), Clara Espar Llaquet (19), Victoria Smith (16) and Bianca Seyfert (13) already are in double-figures for goals scored in 2015.
Starting goalkeeper Katelynn Thompson is averaging 9.33 saves per match and has a 5.50 goals against average after eight contests.
