The San José State men's golf team kicks off its spring season this week against a dynamite field at the 24th annual Amer Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawai'i.
Nine top-25 teams and seven top-25 individuals in the country, including the Spartans' Cody Blick, will tee it up at the 7,074-yard Kings Course beginning Thursday at 7:30 a.m. HT.
The 36-hole event continues Friday with round two, and concludes with round three on Saturday. Joining the Spartans in the field are: #2-Oregon, #4-Texas, #7-UCLA, #13-Auburn, #14-Southern California, #16-Stanford, #18-Texas Tech, #19-Washington, #25-Arizona State, Oregon State, Oklahoma State, TCU, UC Davis, Colorado, Hawai'i-Hilo, Hawai'i-Manoa and Japan's Osaka Gakuin University.
"It's time to get started and find out what we can do," said Spartans' head coach John Kennaday. "We are starting in a great place and in one of the toughest fields I've seen. It is a tremendous opportunity for us."
Blick enters the spring season ranked 25th in the nation by GolfStat's final pole released at the end of fall play (11/18/14). During SJSU's fall season, Blick set a school record with a 10-under par 62 in the final round to capture co-medalist honors at the Price's Give `Em Five Invitational, and notched two other top-three finishes.
"Cody has a tremendous chance to improve even more given our tough schedule this season," Kennaday said. "Everybody on the team learned a lot this fall, and it will be interesting to see how fast these guys can learn from playing this spring."
