Los Gatos, Calif.--Freshmen Summer Avery and Yavianliz Rosado won their match Thursday afternoon for the San José State sand volleyball team, but the Spartans fell to Santa Clara, 4-1, at Los Gatos High School.
Avery and Rosado, playing in the number-three position, had to go three sets with Santa Clara's GiGi Cresto and Jensen Cunningham. The Broncos won the first set 21-11, but Avery and Rosado rebounded to win the next two sets 21-19 and 15-13. The Spartan pair was up 13-11 in the third set but had to hold off the Bronco pair who had tied the set at 13-13 before Avery and Rosado scored the final two points.
The other four Spartan matches went just two sets each. Nandyala Gama and Bre Moreland lost a hard-fought match 21-18, 21-15. Jamie Hirai and Allison Meehan fell 21-9, 21-9, while Sara Hibbs and Julie Sam lost 21-13, 21-12. Samantha Pereira and Breann Robinson fell 21-10, 21-9.
San José State will play three dual matches this weekend. Saturday, the team will play at Sacramento State beginning at 1 p.m. The Spartans then travel to California on Sunday for duals against the Golden Bears at 10 a.m., and #8 Pacific at 1 p.m.
