Following a two-week break in the schedule, the San Jose State University women's track and field team begins its outdoor season with the majority of the team competing in the annual Johnny Mathis Invitational at San Francisco State University, Saturday, March 21.
Twenty-eight Spartans seek to establish in a baseline at the start of the outdoor season at Cox Stadium. San José State has entries in every track event except for the 5,000 meters and in the high jump, long jump and triple jump.
Junior Jade Childs makes her San José State debut as the only Spartan entered in the Northridge Invitational Multi-Events, March 19 & 20 on the Cal State Northridge campus. The Northern Arizona University transfer has a lifetime best of 4,974 in the heptathlon and finished third in the event at the 2014 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Her first day of the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200 meters begins at 12:15 p.m. Final day competitions in the long jump, javelin and 800 meters start at 1:15 p.m.
Nearly half of the Spartan team headed to the Johnny Mathis Invitational will compete in their first major college competition. Freshman Caitlin Wilson is coming off a seventh-place finish in the 200 at the Mountain West Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. Wilson tops a significant sprint contingent.
High jumper Emma Sutherland, a graduate student from Napier, New Zealand, and freshman long jumpers Nicole Iloanya and Cambree Harbaugh also placed in the top-eight at the Mountain West meet. Iloanya and Harbaugh are entered in the long jump, the triple jump and as half of a 4x100-meter relay quartet.
Pacific, USF, Santa Clara and Saint Mary's are four NCAA Division I opponents facing off with San José State. The Johnny Mathis Invitational begins at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are $7.00 per person.
