Honolulu, Hawaii-- Jamie Hirai and Allison Meehan won their opening match at the Sand Volleyball Showcase in Hawaii Saturday as five San José State sand volleyball pairs competed in Honolulu.
In the Gold Bracket, Hirai and Meehan defeated Elizabeth Culpepper and Amanda Moriary from Hawaii Pacific 21-14, 21-3, in the first round. In the quarterfinals, the pair fell to eventual runners-up Olivia Urban and Katie Spieler of Hawaii 21-14, 21-12.
Two other Spartan pairs competed in the Gold Bracket. Summer Avery and Julie Sam fell to Emilee Erichsen and Molly Turner of Grand Canyon, 21-11, 21-3. In the quarterfinals, Bre Moreland and Nandyala Gama lost to Brittany Tiegs and Samme Brown of Hawaii 21-11, 21-13.
In the Silver Bracket, Breann Robinson and Navjit Brianna fell to Gianna Guinasso and Hannah Zalopany from Hawaii, 21-15, 21-15. Yavianliz Rosado and Sara Hibbs fell in the quarterfinals to runners-up Heather Boyan and Lara Schreiber of Hawaii, 21-11, 21-9.
San José State finishes the 2015 season Sunday with two matches in Hawaii. The team faces Grand Canyon at 3 p.m. HDT/6 p.m. PDT and Hawaii at 7 p.m. HDT/10 p.m. PDT.
