ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- San José State's women's tennis team debuted at the 2015 Mountain West Women's Tennis Championship with a 4-1 win over Utah State at the Linda Estes Tennis Indoor Center.
With the quarterfinal win over the Aggies (14-11, 2-3 MW), No. 62 San José State (14-6, 3-1 MW) advances to the semifinals and will take on either Nevada or New Mexico on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. MT.
Due to inclement weather, Friday's match was played in the Linda Estes Tennis Indoor Center instead of the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium at the University of New Mexico.
The match started an hour late at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium as the teams warmed up under warm sunshine, but a storm cell moved in, and in the second game of all three doubles, the skies opened up. After a 15-minute delay, the two teams moved back across the street indoors, just beating a massive hailstorm.
"This was a hard match, with a lot of adversity," said San José State head coach Sylvain Malroux. "Our team goes about its business and I'm really proud of them, especially with the altitude and the weather and changing courts."
The Spartans captured the doubles point with a 7-5 win at No. 2 by Malin Cubukcu and Sybille Gauvain and a 6-0 victory at No. 3 by Abbie Pahz and Julianna Bacelar.
After dropping the first singles match, Pahz (No. 6), Rey (No. 3) and Bacelar (No. 4) rattled off consecutive wins to lift the Spartans to Saturday's semifinal.
Bacelar's pair of wins on the afternoon gives her 131 in her career, just one shy of a share of the most in program history.
