Softball At MW Leader San Diego State This Weekend

San Jose, Calif. - This weekend, San José State softball resumes conference play with a trip to San Diego. The Spartans and the first-place team in the Mountain West, the San Diego State Aztecs, play a three-game set which will help define the conference standing heading into the final month of the season.

SPARTAN QUICK HITS

RBI MACHINE

Jessie Hufstetler (Jr., INF, Atascadero, Calif.), with 57 RBIs, owns the SJSU single-season record, ranks first in the MW, and third in the nation. At her current pace (1.46 RBI/gm - 5th in the nation) she would end the regular season with 82 RBIs, nearly 30 more than the Spartans previous record of 53.

SEEING DOUBLE EQUALS WINS

With its 12 hit barrage against Colorado State (4/4), San José State has rapped out double digit hits in 21 of its 40 games this season. When the Spartans reach double digit hits they are 21-0.

CONTROLLING THE SHILLELAGH

San José State leads the MW in several offensive categories...the Spartans are tops the league in batting average (.344), hits (370), RBI (223), slugging (.472), walks (174), on-base % (.445) and runs (248). As a team SJSU has struck out just 137 times in 1,076 at-bats.

SPARTANS ARE RAKING NATIONALLY

San José State is the top ranked team in the Mountain West, and ranks 12th in the nation, with a .344 batting average. In addition, its .445 on-base percentage, 6.20 runs per game, and .472 slugging percentage nationally rank 11th, 41st and 66th, respectively.

PATIENCE PAYS OFF

The Spartans have three hitters in the top-five of the MW batting standings. Michelle Cox (Sr., OF, Sydney, Australia) is hitting .453, which is 2nd in the conference and 30th in the nation. Jessie Hufstetler (Jr., INF, Atascadero, Calif.) ranks 3rd in the MW and 38th in the nation with a .449 average and Jessica Madrid (Jr., OF, Santa Ana, Calif.) is hitting .413, 5th in the league and 112th in the country.

MODERN DAY MURDERS ROW

Among the top-four batters in the Spartans line up - Michelle Cox (Sr., OF, Sydney, Australia), Jessica Madrid (Jr., OF, Santa Ana, Calif.), Jessie Hufstetler (Jr., INF, Atascadero, Calif.) & Sharon-Renae Estrada (Sr., INF, San Bernardino, Calif.) - all four rank in the top-10 of the MW in on base %, three in are in the top-10 in runs, hits, RBI, batting average and sac flies.

Two appear in the top-10 in slugging %, doubles, home runs, walks and hit by pitches.

GET TO THE YARD ON TIME...THIS MAY NOT TAKE LONG

In the Spartans 26 victories this season, the team has defeated its opponent in less than the regulation seven innings, 10 times. San José State has won all five of its seven home games by run-rule.

SENIOR FISH OFF TO HER BEST START

Madison Fish (Sr., RHP, Sacramento, Calif.) is 12-4 in 18 appearances and 14 starts in 2015. She has passed her previous season best of eight wins, from 2014. In 83.1 innings Fish has struck out 64 batters and thrown five complete games.

LANG TAKES THE BALL

Allison Lang (Sr., RHP, Fountain Valley, Calif.) has a 9-7 record, five saves and a 2.76 ERA in 27 appearances and 20 starts this year. SJSU has faced six top-25 teams and Lang has taken the ball in five of those games. She started against #1 Florida, #3 Michigan, #14 Arizona, #15 Baylor and #18 California.
