Errors Prove Costly In Spartans 6-5 Loss

May 1, 2015

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. -- San José State committed a season-high six errors which led to four unearned runs and a 6-5 loss to the Nevada Wolf Pack on Friday afternoon at SJSU Field.

In the defeat, the Spartans fall behind league-leading Fresno State by two games in the loss column with five games to play.

Trailing 5-2 going to the bottom of the fifth, the Spartans began mounting a comeback.  Jessie Hufstetler doubled to open the frame and two batters later Erin Rodriguez drove her in on a single off the glove of Wolf Pack third baseman Alyssa Mendez to make it a 5-3 game.

In the bottom of the sixth, SJSU capitalized on some two-out lightening.  Michelle Cox was on first and moved into scoring position with a stolen base.  Jessica Madrid then singled down the left field line to plate Cox.  Madrid moved up to second on the throw home.  Jessie Hufstetler then ripped the third triple of her career to the right field corner scoring Madrid and tying the game 5-5.

In the top of the seventh Spartans starter Allison Lang was lifted with one-out and a runner on third.  She ended up the tough luck loser having scattered 12 hits and surrendering six runs, four of which were unearned.

Madison Fish entered the circle with a 1-2 count and promptly dispatched the batter on a strikeout.  Fish appeared to be out of the inning on a comebacker, but the ball deflected off the webbing of her glove.  The runner scored from third putting Nevada back in front 6-5.

In the bottom of the seventh, San José State had the bases loaded with one out.  Nicole Schultz, who had doubled in SJSU's first run of the game in the second inning, was jammed on a 3-1 offering.  The ball was fielded by the Nevada pitcher, who then flipped it home for the second out of the inning.  Cox, the next batter, took a third strike and Nevada had won the first game of the series 6-5.

FIVE ERRORS IN THREE INNINGS LEADS TO FOUR UNEARNED RUNS

With the Spartan leading 1-0 after two, Nevada's Megan Sweet led off the third with a solo homer.  Two batters later, a throwing error by catcher Emma Entzminger, on a steal attempt, led to the Wolf Pack's second run of the inning.  It was the first of four unearned runs the Spartans would allow in the three frames.

In the fourth a pair of errors, one on shortstop Alyssa Martinez and another by Entzminger, who had moved to second base at the beginning of the inning, led to two more unearned runs.

In the top of the fifth, a third error by Entzminger and one by Rodriguez, led to the Wolf Pack's fifth run of the game and fourth unearned run in three innings.

The Spartans and Wolf Pack return to the diamond on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m.  Senior ceremonies will follow the game on the Deanna Mauer Memorial Patio.
