San Jose, Calif. -- By a vote of the conference's head coaches, San José State softball players Jessica Madrid, Allison Lang, Jessie Hufstetler, Michelle Cox and Nicole Schultz earned 2015 Mountain West All-Conference honors it was announced by the conference office in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Madrid, Lang and Hufstetler were first-team selections. Cox and Schultz earned second-team honors. The all-conference teams are chosen based on the 24-game conference schedule in which the Spartans finished in third place with a 17-7 record.
A junior who transferred to San José State this year from Delaware State, Madrid set a new single-season Spartans' record for doubles with 19, which also led the conference. In Mountain West play she ranked second in doubles (10), fourth in batting average (.438) and hits (35), fifth in runs (25) and ninth in on base percentage (.500). A left fielder, she had a perfect fielding percentage (1.000). Overall, her .439 batting average led the team as did her 79 total hits, both of which were the second most in the Mountain West this year.
Lang, a senior from Fountain Valley, Calif., had a 2.41 ERA in 81.1 innings. She made 14 starts and 18 total appearances, tossing nine complete games with four shutouts and three saves. Her ERA was the third best in league play and she ranked in the top-five in opposing batting average (.259), strikeouts (39), wins (7), starts (14) and led the league in saves (3). In addition, Lang equaled the Spartans single-season record for saves with seven.
A two-time all-conference honoree, Hufstetler's .437 batting average was second on the team and fifth in the league in conference play. She ranked in the top-10 in slugging (.676), on base percentage (.554), doubles (9), walks (14). A junior first baseman out of Atascadero, Calif., defensively Hufstetler was second in putouts (172), third in chances (176) and led the conference in fielding double plays (10). Finally, she set a new Spartans' single-season RBI record with 69, which shattered the old record of 53.
Cox, a senior from Sydney, Australia, was sixth in runs in conference play with 22 in 24 games. She was second in steals (9) and plate appearances (95), and led the league in at bats (85). A right fielder, she had a perfect fielding percentage (1.000) and set a new San José State record for runs in a season with 64 this year.
A senior center fielder from Las Vegas, Nev., Schultz batted .386 in conference play while slugging .614 and had an on base percentage of .500. In 23 appearances in Mountain West games, she led the team in home runs and ranked third in doubles. Schultz earned Mountain West Player of the Week honors (April 13-19) after hitting .833 with three runs, three RBIs, two doubles, one walk and one hit-by-pitch in a three-game sweep of Utah State.
