San Diego, Calif. --- Jade Childs got San José State out to a solid start at the Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday by ending day onein fourth place out of 12 athletes inthe heptathlon.

A lifetime-best 11.07-meter throw in the shot put was one of the day's highlights for Childs. The distance beat her previous personal-best of 10.52 meters, which also stood as the San José State record.

"I think it was a great day one," said Spartans' head coach Jeff Petersmeyer. "We are in good position right now, and we'll see how everything shakes out tomorrow in the final three events."

Childs began the day with a runner-up finish in the 100-meter hurdles, with a time of 14.05. The time was just off of her personal-record 14.01 and Childs trailed only Utah State's Chari Hawkins in the event.

In the high jump, Childs took three tries at her season-best 1.67 meters, but finished the event keeping a 1.64-meter mark, which she cleared on her final jump.

Childs clocked a 26.20 in the 200-meter dash to win her section. She ended up sixth overall in the event.

"Jade is a gamer," Petersmeyer said. "She digs deep during tough competition. We'll come back out here tomorrow and I think the long jump will be a big event for us."

Through four events, Childs sits in fourth place out of 12 heptathletes at 2,354 points. Three events remain tomorrow afternoon including: the javelin throw, 800-meter run and Child's signature event, the long jump.

The action begins Thursday at 12:30 p.m., and live stats are available via the Mountain West Championship Central page.
