Spartans Set To Compete At NCAA Outdoor Track & Field West Prelims

May 26, 2015

Four San José State women's track and field athletes: Cambree Harbaugh (Meridian, Idaho), Nicole Iloanya (Arlington, Texas), Makayla Webb (Sacramento, Calif.) and Emma Sutherland (Napier, New Zealand) begin competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Championships on May 28, in Austin, Texas.

Harbaugh in the long jump, and Webb in the 400 hurdles will start the action for the Spartans on Thursday at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium. Sutherland will compete Friday in the high jump, and Iloanya will follow on Saturday in the triple jump. SJSU is one of six schools in the West Region to have qualifiers across the high jump, long jump and triple jump events.

"We're excited to bring four of our women to the NCAA First Round Championships," said Spartans' head coach Jeff Petersmeyer. "And we hope to add more to that number next year. This will be a great experience for our young team, and I think we can compete well."

It is the first time in the short two-season history of the program that San José State women's track and field athletes will participate in an NCAA West Region Championship. The four Spartans are among 48 entries in their respective events. The top-12 finishers from each event in the West and East Region meets will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 10-13, in Eugene, Ore.

It will be the second time this season competing at Mike A. Myers Stadium for all four of the SJSU athletes. They participated along with the team in the Longhorn Invitational back on May 2. Iloanya achieved the Mountain West's longest triple jump mark of the season that day of 12.79 meters.
