70 Spring Sports Spartans Named Academic All-Mountain West

July 16, 2015

Colorado Springs, Colo.----- Men's basketball sophomores Danny Mahoney and Ryan Singer are among 70 San José State University student-athletes from eight Spartan spring sports teams to earn 2015 Academic All-Mountain West honors.

San Jose State's 70 Academic All-Mountain West award winners represent nearly a 35 percent increase over the Spartans' 52 from spring sports a year ago.

"Taking care of academics is the first reason why our guys are here at San José State," said Spartans' head coach Dave Wojcik. "I'm proud of both Danny and Ryan for the way they performed as student-athletes this past season. We look forward to adding more to this list next season."

To qualify, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale, be enrolled at the conference institution at least one year and participate in at least 50 percent of the team's contests.

The women's swimming and diving team had the most award winners with 23 out of 31 team members earning the conference award. The women's tennis team had the highest percentage of Academic All-Mountain West award winners at 85.7 percent (six of seven).

Women's track and field (13) and baseball (10) were two other Spartan teams with 10 or more Academic All-Mountain West award winners.

Seniors Ta'Rea Cunnigan from women's basketball, track and field distance runner Rebecca Garcia, outfielder Michelle Cox from the softball team and swimmers Kayla Nakamoto, Amber Nelson and Haley Smith are six San Jose State student-athletes to receive their fourth academic all-conference honor from either the Mountain West or the Western Athletic Conference.

For the 2014-15 academic year, 138 Spartans earned an academic all-conference recognition from the Mountain West, Western Athletic Conference or Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
