Colorado Springs, Colo. --- Forty-seven (47) San José State University student-athletes across 13 sports received one of the Mountain West's highest academic honors Tuesday with the announcement of the 2014-15 Scholar-Athlete Awards.
The honorees include those student-athletes that have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and participated in a Mountain West sponsored varsity competition.
The women's track and field team led the way for SJSU with 11 honorees, five of which are also on the list for competition during the women's cross country season.
Women's swimming and diving and women's tennis each had seven honorees. The softball team has six honored, while women's volleyball had four honorees.
Danny Mahoney of the men's basketball team was one of 15 Spartan freshman honored. Football's Nate Velichko, another freshman, and teammate Tim Crawley are the two football Scholar-Athletes. It's the second year in a row for Crawley who became the football program's first conference scholar-athlete last season. There are a total of 26 repeat honorees from a season ago.
Women's basketball and women's soccer also had two honorees. Baseball's Jack Veasey and Fanny Johansson of the women's golf team were also honored.
The Spartan Scholar-Athletes helped the Mountain West to a new league-record total of 730 honoree for the 2014-15 season.
