San Jose, Calif.----- Chad Skorupka, a member of the San José State University women's tennis coaching staff the last three seasons, was appointed the program's head coach.
Gene Bleymaier, the Spartans director of athletics, made the announcement following former head coach Sylvain Malroux accepting the University of Nevada men's tennis head coaching position.
Skorupka first joined the San José State coaching staff in 2012 as the volunteer assistant and was named the assistant coach in 2013.
"I want to thank Gene Bleymaier and his staff for giving me the opportunity to take over the program. I look forward to continuing the success of the past few years we've had on the tennis court and in the classroom. We will work hard each day to reach our goal of winning the Mountain West championship," says Skorupka, who successfully led women's programs at Wake Forest and Yale. His head coaching win-loss record is 119-83 over nine seasons and includes four trips to the NCAA Championships. All five of his Wake Forest and two of his four Yale teams were ranked in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings.
During Skorupka's three seasons with the Spartans, San José State has a 45-27 dual match record, won the 2013 Western Athletic Conference championship and was listed in the final ITA national rankings for the first time in 2013 at #63 and in 2015 at #73. Academically, the ITA honored San José State with its All-Academic team award in each of the last four seasons and nine Spartans with 16 individual national scholar-athlete awards since 2013.
"We're pleased to name Chad Skorupka as the San Jose State women's tennis head coach. Chad has been an integral part of our program's success the last three years as a member of our coaching staff and was a successful Division I head coach at Wake Forest and Yale. It is our intent to provide a seamless transition for our student-athletes," says Bleymeier.
