Clara Espar Llaquet Helps Spain Start Defense Of FINA World Championship

Kazan, Russia----- Playing in her first FINA Women's Water Polo World Championship match, San Jose State University two-time All-America Clara Espar Llaquet scored twice for Spain as the Spaniards began defense of their world championship with a 14-7 win over host Kazakhstan.

Espar Llaquet was one of five players to score for the defending champions at the 16th FINA World Championships. Spain won the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona in 2013.

A 2015 second-team All-America, Espar Llaquet became the first San José State player to score 90 or more goals in multiple seasons with 94 scores her sophomore season after scoring 96 in 2014.

Espar Llaquet is the first Spartan player to play in a FINA World Championship.

Sixteen teams are competing for the 16th world championship. Pool play for Spain continues on July 28 against New Zealand and concludes on July 30 against Canada. The elimination round starts on August 1 with a championship game scheduled for August 5.
