John Mackey Award Watch List

New York, N.Y.----- San Jose State University's Billy Freeman is one of 33 tight ends named to the 2015 John Mackey Award Watch List. The award is given annually to the college game's most outstanding tight end in December at the Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pound junior from Mesa, Ariz., is on the John Mackey Award Watch List for the second year in a row. Freeman is looking forward to a more productive 2015 season after injuries allowed curtailed his participation to just seven games. He still caught 19 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown and was named to the John Mackey Award's Mid-season Watch List.

Freeman first gained attention as an honorable mention All-Mountain West tight end in 2013. He caught 27 passes for 427 yards and two touchdowns. Freeman was one of 13 tight ends that season with 400 or more receiving yards and at least a 15.0 yards per catch average.

Freeman is the second Spartan to be named to a preseason Watch List. On July 6, running back Tyler Ervin was named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List recognizing the most versatile player in college football.
