San Jose, Calif. --- Head coach Lauren Hanson had no trouble finding positives coming from the San José State women's soccer team's 2-0 loss in an exhibition match versus UC Davis on Friday at Spartan Soccer Field.
"The whole point was just to see everybody play," Hanson said. "We wanted to see what we have personality-wise, and get the nerves out. I think we accomplished just that."
Eight players stepped onto the pitch for their first competition in a San José State uniform. Falling behind early didn't stop the Spartans from settling in for some solid match experience.
"In watching our new players I thought Hayden (Kelley) played really well in the back for us," Hanson said. "Darriell Franklin was a great utility player for us today and really sprung some of our offense. Then, we got Paige (Simoneau) in goal for the entire second half, and she did a fantastic job."
It was a busy day for Spartan goalkeepers, as the Aggies put seven of 17 shots on goal. San José State recorded six shots with one off the foot of Carley McBeath going on goal.
Andi Damian and Rachel Smith were the goal scorers for UC Davis. Both scores came inside the first seven minutes of the match.
"We'll get back to practice with a full squad next week, and be ready to get after it." Hanson added.
San José State begins the regular season on the road next Friday, August 21, at Lamar. The match in Beaumont, Texas is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. CT.
