Aiming for a non-conference road win: San Jose State's last road win against a non-conference Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent was a 12-0 shutout at Navy on September 29, 2012. Since then, the Spartans lost non-conference road games at Stanford and at Minnesota in 2013 and at Auburn and at Minnesota in 2014.

An opportunity for a victory over a Pac-12 opponent: San Jose State is winless in its last 11 contests against current Pac-12 members. The Spartans' last victory against a current Pac-12 member was a 35-34 win over Stanford on September 9, 2006, in Spartan Stadium. The last time San Jose State went on the road and defeated a Pac-12 opponent was September 9, 2000 when the Spartans posted a 40-27 victory at Stanford. Current Oregon State offensive coordinator Dave Baldwin was the Spartans' head coach in the 2000 win at Stanford. Since then, the Spartans have an 0-19 record in road games against current Pac-12 opponents.

Dan Ferrigno returns to Corvallis: Dan Ferrigno, San Jose State's new special teams and tight ends coach, was an Oregon State assistant coach during the 1987 through 1995 seasons under head coaches Dave Kragthorpe and Jerry Pettibone. In his first season, he was the position coach for Oregon State first-team All-Pac-10 selection Pat Chaffey.

Pass defense stays stingy: In 2014, San José State's pass defense was tops in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) for fewest passing yards allowed per game at 117.8. The Spartans, the national leader in fewest passing yards allowed and second in pass efficiency defense heading into week #3, began 2015 limiting New Hampshire to 60 passing yards, the first time since the 2010 season a New Hampshire failed to pass for at least 100 yards in a game, and Air Force to 24. San Jose State's pass defense faces its sternest test of the season when it takes on Oregon State with Dave Baldwin as offensive coordinator. In the last four games the former Spartan head coach schemed offensive game plans against San Jose State, his Utah State and Colorado State teams averaged 292.5 passing yards per game.

The corner store: Since junior Cleveland Wallace, III, and senior Jimmy Pruitt were paired as San José State's starting cornerbacks in the third game of the 2014 season, there are six games in which an opponent failed to gain 100 passing yards. The Spartans head into the Oregon State game with a three-game streak in which the opposition passed for less than 100 yards with Wallace, III, and Pruitt on the field for San José State. Wallace, III, was a 2014 second-team All-Mountain West selection and Pruitt received honorable mention accolades.
