STANFORD, Calif. - San José State University women's cross country team finished eighth at the 6K Stanford Invitational on Saturday with 30 participating schools competing in the 42nd edition of the meet.
Graduate student Jennifer Beckingham (21:10.0) once again led the Spartan squad for the third meet in a row this season, followed by three freshmen: Adilene Aldapa (21:50.7), Jeanette Zambrano (22:30.7) and Ashley Cahalan (22:35.1).
256 runners packed the start line as Spartans cross country coach Brad Wick said it was a learning experience for the freshmen.
"That first 100 meters was a bit of a shock and we got too far back except for Jen (Beckingham). But that's what these races are all about, to realize and understand how hard these races go out. They did a great job moving up throughout the race and they finished well but they did it the hard way. If you get out just a little bit quicker that first 100 meters and the rest of the race could be a little bit easier."
The fifth finisher for the Spartans was Lalida Maokhamphiou who came in at 23:06.3. She was followed by Diana Orozco (23:13.2), Karina Nunes (23:28.2) and Melanie Fujiwara (23:58.4).
"We can still close the gap between the fourth and fifth runner," said Wick referring to the 30 second gap. "It will be the goal by season's end, but for now, they ran really solid races.
North Dakota State's Erin Teschuk won the race with a time of 20:06.8 with Stanford taking the team title. Among the 14 Division I schools, the Spartans finished seventh.
The Spartans will have their next race in two weeks on Friday, October 9 at the San Francisco State Invitational.
