San Francisco -- The San José State women's cross country team opened their 2015 season by finishing third out of six Division I teams at the University of San Francisco Invitational on Saturday morning.

Jennifer Beckingham led the Spartans by crossing the finish line eighth overall and sixth among the Division 1 finishers in the 5K race through Golden Gate Park with a time of 18:05.7. For the England native, it was her best score at San José State, bettering a 15th place finish from last year's USF Invitational.

"Jennifer ran a great race. She stuck her nose with the front pack from the start and that's just where she should be," said Spartans cross country coach Brad Wick. "She had a great race overall and she will get better throughout the season."

Freshmen Adilene Aldapa and Ashley Cahalan had a strong debut to their San José State careers as Aldapa scored 12 points with a time of 18:40.7 and Cahalan scored 16 points, finishing six seconds behind her teammate.

"Adilene and Ashley both did a great job. Ashley probably went out a little bit too strong and Adilene went out too slow and they both met in the middle but that's what these races are all about. The whole point of these early season meet is just figuring it out and tweaking things so you have your strategy and mental composure ready for the end of the season. So these meets are meant for learning experiences and it was a good one," said Wick, referring to the season ending Mountain West Conference Championship that he's looking for the team to peak at.

Senior Lalida Maokhamphiou finished with a score of 20 (19:07.2) and junior Karina Nunes finished with 26 points (19:21.4) to round out the five scorers. Both had their best career scores at the USF Invitational as this was Maokhamphiou's fourth race and Nunes' third.

"This meet was a great starting point and the team can see where we can improve and we can still get a lot better," said the Spartans coach.

The next race for the Spartans is the Fresno State Invitational on Friday, September 11.
