After a long month on the road, the San José State women's soccer team returns to Spartan Soccer Field for the regular-season home opener Friday afternoon against Saint Mary's College at 4:00 p.m. PT. Live streaming and stats are available for the the match, but we hope to see you there! Tickets for adults are $5 and youth 12 and under are just $3. Youth that show up in a soccer uniform get in for $1. The team also plays Sunday, September 13, on the road at Cal Poly in a 12:00 p.m. PT start. FINALLY HOME!
San José State opened up the 2015 season with four consecutive matches on the road, something the program hasn't done since 2006. SJSU split a tough weekend trip to Texas, beating Lamar, 3-0, while falling to Rice, 2-1, in double-overtime. Then, San José State went to UC Santa Barbara for a 1-1 tie before defeating Sacramento State, 2-1, in the most recent match on Aug. 30.
FRANKLIN WINS MOUNTAIN WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Freshman forward Darriell Franklin (Fr., F, La Habra, Calif.) was named the MW Offensive Player of the Week for Aug. 23-30. She became the first Spartan freshman to win a conference player of the week since Mikaella Meibock in 2012. In two matches, Franklin put three out of five shots on goal and two in the back of the net.
FRANKLIN NETS GAME-WINNER IN 2-1 WIN
San José State picked up a 2-1 win on the road at Sacramento State when Darriell Franklin booted in the game-winner in the 55th minute. The came less than four minutes after Sacramento State had evened the match at 1-1. With the win, the Spartans ended a four-match road trip to open the season at 2-1-1.
CHAPA THE EARLY POINTS LEADER FOR SJSU
Maricruz Chapa (Jr., MF, Orange Cove, Calif.) has made an immediate impact in her first season as a Spartan. The transfer from Fresno Community College leads the team with five points and has two goals with one assist on the young season.
MOUNTAIN WEST SNAPSHOT
If you look at the Mountain West Standings this week, you'll find San José State (2-1-1) in second place out of 12 teams. The Spartans are one of four teams in the MW with a record above .500. Wyoming (3-0-2) leads all teams in the standings. San José State begins Mountain West play on Sept. 25 at Wyoming.
THREE OF THE NEXT FOUR AT HOME
After a lengthy road trip to begin the season, SJSU will play three of the next four matches at Spartan Soccer Field. First, the home opener against Saint Mary's College this Friday afternoon then, Sept. 15, at 4:00 p.m., versus San Francisco and Sept. 20, at 1:00 p.m., versus Cal State Northridge. The match against CSUN will be the final nonconference contest for SJSU.
MORE ON SAINT MARY'S COLLEGE
The Gaels are out to a hot start in 2015 at 5-0-1. They come into Friday's match at 2-0 on the road and fresh off of a 1-0 overtime win against Nevada. Travis Clarke is in his first season as the head coach for Saint Mary's College. He was the head coach for six seasons at Cal State San Bernardino prior to joining SMC. The Gaels lead the all-time series 9-3, with the last meeting ending in a 3-0 victory for Saint Mary's. San José State's last win against the Gaels was a 1-0 victory on Sept. 26, 2010.
MORE ON CAL POLY
The Mustangs begin the week with a 2-2-2 overall record, and are coming off of a big 4-0 win over Fresno State last weekend. Cal Poly finished last season at 10-9-1 and 5-3-0 in Big West play. The Mustangs are an experienced bunch that includes nine seniors that make a total of 18 upperclassmen. Alex Crozier is in his 24th season as the head coach for Cal Poly and has an overall record of 268-153-44. Cal Poly leads San José State 7-2 in the all-time series, and the Spartans are winless against the Mustangs since a 1-0 victory at home on August 29, 2000.
TWO JC TRANSFERS MAKING IMMEDIATE IMPACT ON OFFENSE
Junior college transfers Samantha Orodpour (Jr., MF, Chino Hills, Calif.) and Maricruz Chapa both scored the first goals of their Spartan careers during opening weekend in Texas. Orodpour, an All-South Coast Conference honoree last year at Mount San Antonio College, put in SJSU's first goal of the 2015 season helping the team to a 3-0 win over Lamar. Chapa, a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) second-team All-American at Fresno City College, put the Spartans up 1-0 in the 21st minute against Rice.
ZOE EYEING 11TH SHUTOUT
With 10 career shutouts,Zoe Makrigiannis (Sr., GK, Surrey, B.C., Canada) is one shy of tying Amee Brown (1996-99) for most in SJSU history. She was nine minutes away from doing so in the 3-0 victory over Lamar in the season opener, but was subbed out in the 81st minute, giving way to freshman goalkeeper Paige Simoneau (Fr., GK, Carona, Calif.). Makrigiannis is also second in career goals against average at 1.35 and sixth with 191 saves.

The voting panel of the 12 Mountain West women's soccer head coaches picked San José State to finish in seventh place this season in the preseason poll. The results have three-time defending regular-season and tournament champion San Diego State winning it all again in 2015. The Spartans received 53 points, putting them even with UNLV in seventh place ahead of Air Force, Fresno State, Colorado State and Nevada.

The momentum carried into Sunday's match at Rice when SJSU took a 1-0 lead into the 80th minute against the reigning Conference-USA champions. However, the Owls scored an equalizer before the end of regulation and then put in the golden goal in the 107th minute to defeat the Spartans 2-1.
