MORAGA, Calif. - The final day of competition at the Saint Mary's Fall Invitational followed a similar pattern to the first two for San José State's women's tennis team. Sybille Gauvain won each of her two singles matches on the day and teamed with Marine Dans for a doubles victory, meaning the Spartans took home singles and doubles titles in the tournament's "A" bracket.
The duo of Gauvain, a sophomore, and Dans, a transfer junior, netted an 8-6 win in the final round despite facing Jana McCord and Jamie Pawid on their home courts.
"It was great to see Marine and Sybille claim their first title together," said Spartans head coach Chad Skorupka. "They had a match point last week in the doubles final at Cal, and today it took five match points to get the title. They hung in there together and it was a really good win today."
Gauvain had to get past Pawid again in the singles final after edging Gonzaga's Sophia Whittle in three sets in the semifinals. She wasted no time in doing so, putting down Pawid by a score of 6-4, 6-1.
"Sybille and her opponent were pretty tired at the beginning of the match," Skorupka said. At the end it was Sybille's ability to hit winners and outhit her opponent when she needed to. It was a great effort by her today."
Sunday's 3-0 effort capped off a perfect 9-0 weekend for Gauvain and moved her fall doubles record with Dans to 7-1.
"Even though I was tired from playing so many tough matches, I was able to stay focused and give it everything I had," said Gauvain, a Frejus, France, native.
